To emphasise the value of one individual to God, Jesus told a story of a sheep that was lost, likening the sheep to us, and the reaction of the shepherd to such a loss:
‘What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance’ Luke chapter 15 verses 4-7.
We don’t know if anyone replied to Jesus’ question for who would risk their lives for one lost sheep? We know as the Good Shepherd, Jesus did just that for He came ‘to seek and to save that which was lost’ Luke’s chapter 19 verse 10. Jesus later said, ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep John’s Gospel chapter 10 verse 11.
