The opening chapters of the Bible present to us an idyllic and peaceful scene. God created the heavens and the earth. He also created man and woman and placed them in a beautiful Garden. Indeed, everything that He had made was very good. Sadly, Adam and Eve disobeyed God; therefore, God drove them out of the Garden and peace was lost!
Indeed, since that time, mankind has been involved in a constant search for lasting peace but has found it to be out of reach. Isaiah, an Old Testament prophet, used a familiar scene to underline the hopelessness of such a search: ‘But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked’ Isaiah chapter 57 verses 20-21.
We have all, no doubt, stood and gazed at the sea, which, even at its calmest, is never completely at rest. However, all is not lost! Jesus said, ‘Come to Me . . . and I will give you rest’ Matthew chapter 11 verse 28. True and lasting peace can be found in Him alone.
