The Bible says of Jesus, ‘who for the JOY THAT WAS SET BEFORE HIM endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down on the right hand of the throne of God’, Hebrews chapter 12 verse 2. As we trace His life on earth, we discover that rejection, shame and death marked His pathway. He was ‘despised and rejected by men, a Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief’, Isaiah chapter 53 verse 3. We might well wonder what drove Him on in the face of such hostility.
One hymn writer expressed it, simply:
For us in love He bled, for us in anguish died;
’Twas love that bowed His sacred head, and pierced His precious side.
It was ‘the JOY THAT WAS SET BEFORE HIM’ that led Him to endure the cross – the joy of ultimately being ‘sat down the right hand of the throne of God’ and the joy of ‘bringing many sons to glory’, Hebrews chapter 2 verse 10. If you trust Him as your Saviour, you will be able to look forward to a home in heaven and say with the Psalmist, ‘Weeping may endure for a night, but JOY COMES IN THE MORNING’, Psalm 30 verse 5!
