It has been said, ‘FAITH is believing in something, when common sense tells you not to’. Common sense tells us that it is foolishness to believe that a man’s death on a Roman cross can save us from our sins. However, God reminds us, ‘My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways’, Isaiah chapter 55 verse 8.
Consider the words of the apostle Paul to Christians in Corinth: ‘For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God . . . For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe . . . we preach Christ crucified’, 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verses 18, 21, 23.
‘Common sense’ has no part to play in God’s plan of salvation for mankind. Paul also wrote: ‘For by grace you have been saved, through FAITH, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God’, Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8; therefore, he called upon all people to turn in ‘repentance toward God and FAITH toward our Lord Jesus Christ’, Acts chapter 20 verse 21.
