God’s Word, the Bible, brings us all down to the same level and makes us face reality. It does not matter how rich we might be in this world’s goods, spiritually we are bankrupt and have nothing to bring to God. Isaiah, an Old Testament prophet, said, ‘But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away’, Isaiah chapter 64 verse 6. Recognising our spiritual poverty before God is the first step on the road to finding His salvation.
Recalling one of the lowest points in his life, David, king of Israel, wrote: ‘This POOR MAN cried out, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles’, Psalm 34 verse 6. Countless men and women have done the same thing since and have found that God remains the same – He still hears and saves! Have you recognised that you are a poor, helpless sinner before God and in need of His salvation? Have you cried out to Him for deliverance? He still hears the cry of the sinner and ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved’, Acts chapter 2 verse 21.
