Solomon wrote, ‘All the brothers of the poor hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him’, Proverbs chapter 19 verse 7. The scene is of a poor man pursuing his friends in a time of deep need but they hide from him and are unwilling to help him. This is a picture of ourselves, spiritually. As sinners, we are all paupers before God and in need of salvation. We soon discover that there is no one willing, or able, to help. However, the Bible tells us that help can be found in One, the Lord Jesus Christ, who Himself was abandoned by His followers in His hour of need. Paul writes of Him, ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich’, 2 Corinthians, chapter 8 verse 9. When He died on the cross for our sins, He ‘looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but found none’, Psalm 69 verse20. He did not abandon us; therefore, we should not abandon Him!
