There have always been ‘religions’ that have offered people the prospect of a utopia on earth. The Bible does teach that there will ultimately be a time of unparalleled prosperity on earth, when Christ returns to reign for one thousand years, Revelation chapter 20 verse 4, which will then be followed by the creation of new heavens and earth, 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 13. However, the words of Jesus sound a note of warning: ‘Do you SUPPOSE THAT I HAVE COME TO GIVE PEACE ON EARTH?‘ I tell you, not at all, but rather division’, Luke chapter 12 verse 51. Prior to the announcement of His birth, angels proclaimed to shepherds, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men’, Luke chapter 2 verses 13-14. If people had received Him as their Saviour at that time, they would have known peace on earth. Sadly, however, they rejected Him and, therefore, forfeited this peace. From that time onwards, He has divided people into those who trust Him for salvation and those who reject Him. The former receive forgiveness of sins, peace with God and the bright prospect of a home in heaven; whereas, the future for the latter is a lost eternity without hope and without God!
