Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister in the UK, famously remarked in one of her speeches, ‘I have only one thing to say: You turn if you want to, The Lady’s not for turning!’ She refused to make U-Turns, when pursuing her policies. She would, undoubtedly, have been uncomfortable in the current climate of almost daily U-Turns by politicians. They all too easily succumb to pressure groups demanding that they reverse their decisions.
Job, an Old Testament character in the Bible, said of God, ‘He is unique, and who can make Him change? And whatever His soul desires, that He does’, Job chapter 23 verse 13. ‘Unique’ means there is no other like Him. Even the strongest leaders have been known to change their minds but God says of Himself, ‘For I am the Lord, I do not change’, Malachi chapter 3 verse 6. The early preachers of the Gospel (good news) of God reflected this; indeed, their message never changed: the need for ‘repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ’, Acts chapter 20 verse 21. The same message comes to us today from an unchanging God.
