Unlike ourselves, God does not change direction as far as His plans are concerned. The Bible says: ‘All we like sheep have gone astray; WE HAVE TURNED, every one, to his own way’, Isaiah chapter 53 verse 6. King David wrote, ‘The wicked (i.e. all of us) are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born’, Psalm 58 verse 3. The apostle Paul said of the Christians, who lived in Thessalonica, ‘You TURNED TO GOD FROM IDOLS to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come’, 1 Thessalonians chapter 1 verses 9-10.
Jesus is the only man to have lived on earth, who had no need to change direction; therefore, He was able, on our behalf, to endure the wrath of God against sin on the cross and thus make it possible for us to be reconciled to God. One hymn writer expressed what our response ought to be:
The dearest idol I have known, whate’re that idol be,
Help me to tear it from Thy throne and worship only Thee.
