Recently, we have been listening to passionate pleas for obedience from our top politicians in the UK as they introduce new laws to control the spread of coronavirus. While we appreciate their attempts to protect us, we must remember that laws alone will not save us. Success will depend on people changing. We have already witnessed the resolve of many people to break the law. Sadly, it has ever been so!
In the Old Testament God gave the children of Israel His Law, including the ten commandments. He also made clear the sanctions for failing to obey it. The people, rashly, affirmed that they would keep it but immediately failed to live up to their boast. God’s Law was good, just and holy but it could not save them; indeed, it simply showed that they were sinners in need of God’s salvation and Saviour.
The apostle Paul took up this theme in the New Testament and applied it to all men and women. Even God’s Law, the highest Law of all, cannot save us, because we are sinners and incapable of reaching its high standards. Paul made it clear: ‘a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ’, Galatians chapter 2 verse 16. No matter how hard we seek to live a life of good works to please God, we will never succeed! We need to join Paul and say, ‘the life which I now in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me’, Galatians chapter 2 verse 20. The Son of God never broke God’s Law; therefore, He was able to bear the judgement for our sin on the cross.
