On my journey into Bath, I pass a traffic information board. A new message recently appeared: ‘FIND JOY IN THE JOURNEY: WALK OR CYCLE’, reflecting the drive to promote healthy living. It is disappointing that our political leaders do not show the same concern for our spiritual welfare!

The most important journey we travel is the ‘journey of life’ and the Bible reveals how we can find JOY in it. This JOY is not found in a place or an activity but in a PERSON. Over two thousand years ago, wise men from the East found this Person, when they travelled to Jerusalem with a question: ‘Where is He who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen His Star in the East and have come to worship Him’, Matthew chapter 2 verses 1-2. They were directed to Bethlehem and there they found JOY IN THEIR JOURNEY: ‘When they saw the star, they REJOICED WITH EXCEEDING GREAT JOY. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him’. Prior to their journey, shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem heard an angel of the Lord declare to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of GREAT JOY which shall be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’, Luke chapter 2 verses 10-11.

Each one of us needs the Saviour from sin, if we are to find TRUE JOY IN THE JOURNEY OF LIFE. Have you found that joy in Christ? Jesus said, ‘there is JOY in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents’, Luke chapter 15 verse 10
