Like most things this year, Halloween will be different to normal.  People are encouraged to participate in socially distant ways; local authorities are asking people not to go from house to house; gatherings have to observe limits and families are asked to stay home.  For some this will be disappointing, others will say, ‘Hallelujah’!

There are few festivals that divide opinion quite so strongly.  Research will show, that more than any other festival, it has become such a mixture of different things, that nobody quite knows what it is all about.  For many, its links with All Hallows Day, root it firmly in Christian tradition.  Others will find links to pagan rituals and more will find strong ties to the occult.  It is true that the prevailing themes of the celebrations are darkness, death, spirits and evil of all kinds.  Add to that the commercialism of the event in more recent history, and we might be forgiven for being confused!

As someone who sees great simplicity in the truth of the Bible, I have been drawn to parents who hold ‘Hallelujah Parties’ for their children, rather than ‘Halloween Parties’!  Rather than focusing on some of the aforementioned, they would rather focus on the light, life and joy that are found through faith in Jesus Christ.  The Bible calls us to repent from personal sin, reject evil, and enjoy the light of Christ in our lives.  We read that people ‘love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil’.  This Halloween, rather than just going with the crowd, will you hear the Lord Jesus say: ‘I am the light of the world’?  Choose instead to follow him, so that you will ‘have the light of life’ for evermore (John chapter 8 verse 12).
