When watching a rugby game recently I noticed the substitute for a player who had to leave the game temporarily because of a bloodied injury, was called a ‘blood replacement’. An understandable name for the substitute.
Isaiah the prophet spoke of One who was ‘wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
and by His stripes we are healed.’ These were references to the Lord Jesus Christ Who came centuries later and that because ‘all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all’ Isaiah chapter 53 verses 5-6.
The Lord Jesus was willing to bear the punishment that each of us deserved to suffer because of our disobedience and sin. As the old hymn says ‘There was no other good enough to pay the price for sin, He only could unlock the gate of Heaven and let us in.’
