We would find it strange to pick up a holiday brochure and discover that all it told us was what could not be found in the destination we were interested in. Some of this ‘negative’ information might be useful to know; however, primarily, we would want to learn about the ‘positives’ that would entice us to visit there.
Like many of you, no doubt, I have had the privilege of seeing a range of impressive and memorable cities, but there is one that I have yet to see that will eclipse all the rest for its beauty, i.e. ‘the holy city, New Jerusalem’, Revelation chapter 21 verse 2. It is the eternal destiny for all those who have turned in repentance to God and put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Saviour. They can say, with assurance, ‘For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come’, Hebrews chapter 13 verse 14.
The apostle, John, describes the city: ‘Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride adorned for her husband . . . And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have pass\ed away. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is the light . . . There shall be no night there. They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light.’ Revelation chapter 21 verses 2, 4, 23; chapter 22 verse 5. Clearly, the numerous negatives are intended to convey to us a gloriously positive picture of a perfect city, which is characterised by eternal calm and joy! It can be your eternal home through faith in Christ.
