Certainty

What can we be sure about, certain about? About anything anymore? Yes, we can be both sure and certain.

In the second world war, Ruth Cave Jones, or ‘Mother Jones’ as she was known, was greatly troubled about the many soldiers that were being killed. She herself lived in the US, a minister’s wife, and also the mother of five children. Like millions of others she was deeply touched and hurt by the loss of so many precious lives and the great fear and uncertainty that hung over her nation. Whilst reflecting on such sadness, Mother Jones, took a small notepad from her apron pocket and jotted down the words and music of this hymn:

In times like these you need a Saviour, in times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure, your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

Refrain:
This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One, this Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure, your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

In times like these you need the Bible, in times like these O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure, your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

In times like these I have a Saviour, in times like these I have an anchor;
I’m very sure, I’m very sure, my anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

As with Mother Jones these are such uncertain and disturbing times. But thank God we can be ‘very sure’. The Bible records the only message of Hope found in Jesus Christ the Saviour and He is that unfailing Rock. You can be CERTAIN and say, or sing(!), ‘I’m very sure, I’m very sure, my anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock’ (ie Jesus Christ).
