Sometimes we prefer not to hear some of the CERTAINTIES of the Bible, because they make us feel uncomfortable and impact on the way in which we want to live our lives. Paul, the apostle, addressed this issue, when he wrote a letter to a young man, Timothy:
‘Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and IT IS CERTAIN WE CAN CARRY NOTHING OUT. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content’, 1 Timothy chapter 6 verses 6-8.
This is an absolute CERTAINTY that we prefer not to consider. Many believe that allowing it to govern our lives would rob us of the pleasure of living and lead to unfulfilled ambitions. Sadly, however, ignoring it will lead us to a lost and empty eternity, without HOPE and without God.
It is so much better to rest on the positive aspect of the verse. Very few of us would doubt the truth that ‘we brought nothing into this world’ but many of us like, secretly, to convince ourselves that we have made something of our lives that we can carry forward into the next phase, after death, whatever form that might take. Nevertheless, the uncomfortable reality that has to be faced is that we brought nothing in and we will take nothing out!
What a gloomy meditation this would be, if this is all we had to say. At the beginning of this new year and in the midst of a ‘killer pandemic’, those who have found contentment in this life through faith in Jesus Christ have much to look forward to in the next:
- forgiveness of sin
- eternal life
- a home in heaven, with Jesus Christ
- eternal peace and joy
