One of the abiding memories of my youth is fishing with my father from beaches along the south coast of England. It was there that I gained my fascination with the sea. I was captivated by its restlessness; even on the calmest of days. Isaiah, an Old Testament prophet, wrote, ‘But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt, There is no peace’, Isaiah chapter 57 verses 20-21.
The restlessness displayed by the sea, is seen in the nations around us. It has been so since sin came into the world and disturbed the peace of God’s creation, Genesis chapters 2 & 3. Mankind has been engaged, ever since, in a search to restore the lost peace and rest. Remarkably, God promised, through Isaiah, ‘Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near . . . I will heal him’, Isaiah chapter 57 verse 19. Jesus Christ, who God sent to be our Saviour, promised, ‘Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it’, Psalm 69 verse 4.
When He was here on earth, Jesus offered this invitation, ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls’, Matthew chapter 11 verses 28, 29. The offer is still open!
In order to give us rest, He had to enter the darkness of Calvary and die on the cross to bear the wrath of God against sin, if we trust Him as our Saviour, we will, indeed, find rest.
