Most would, no doubt, agree that we are passing through a time of unparalleled anxiety. Almost every Government briefing on the current pandemic is dominated by questions as to when it is going to end. No one, of course, has the answer and this only serves to increase the anxiety levels.
We might justifiably ask, therefore, ‘Where can we find ‘an anxiety-free zone’? The answer is by listening to the words of the Lord Jesus, recorded in Matthews’s Gospel. They were spoken by Him to His disciples over 2000 years ago; nevertheless, they remain as relevant today in our present situation, as they were when they were first uttered. Anxiety, fear and panic are not new – they have been present in the hearts of men and women ever since sin invaded God’s world and disturbed the peace.
Jesus had this to say to His followers to dispel their anxiety:
‘Do not worry about your life . . . O you of little FAITH . . . Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? Or What shall we drink? Or what shall we wear? . . . For your heavenly FATHER knows that you need all these things, But seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble’, Matthew chapter 6 verses 25-34.
The antidote to worry is found, therefore, in three key words: FAITH; FATHER; FIRST. If we live in the good of these things, we will find ourselves in ‘an anxiety-free zone’: The starting point is putting our FAITH in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. It is through Him that we will come to know God as a FATHER who cares for and protects us. Jesus said, ‘No one comes to the Father except though Me’ John chapter 14 verse 6. If we are prepared to put God FIRST in our lives, we will discover that worry will disappear.
