We begin with the first of the seven stages of our journey that leads us to the Lamb that points to Christ:

THE PRE-EXISTENCE OF THE LAMB

We noted earlier that a consideration of the LAMB in the Scriptures will take us from eternity to eternity. This first meditation, therefore, will take us before creation and time, Peter highlights this truth, when he writes, ‘a LAMB without blemish and without spot . . . He indeed was FOREORDAINED BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God’, 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 18-21. What an amazing truth! God’s plan for our salvation was in place, in eternity! Our faith rests in the finished work of the PRE-EXISTENT LAMB!

THE PROMISE & THE PROVISON OF THE LAMB

The second stage of our journey is pre-figured for us in a journey undertaken by Abraham. God told him to take his only son, Isaac, to Mount Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering, Genesis chapter 22. Abraham obeyed the test God had put before him; however, Isaac posed the key question, ‘where is THE LAMB for a burnt offering?’, Genesis chapter 22 verse 7. Abraham’s response was a supreme statement of faith: ‘My son, GOD WILL PROVIDE FOR HIMSELF THE LAMB’, verse 8. He believed that God had the answer to Isaac’s dilemma.

Even if he had become the sacrifice on the altar, he trusted that God would raise him from the dead! It is a wonderful picture of what God did for our salvation, when He sent His only Son to be the sacrifice for our sins on the cross. Unlike Isaac, no substitute was found for Him, and ‘He was led as a LAMB to the slaughter’ Isaiah chapter 53 verse 7; however, God raised Him from the dead!
