‘Faith, if it has not works, is dead
Suggested reading: JAMES chapter 2
Today’s reading challenges us as to the reality of our faith. Is it a faith that saves or is it a dead faith? It is true that FAITH saves, Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8, but it must be more than mere profession. Indeed, it is possible for us to believe some of the great truths of Scripture and yet, for our faith to be dead! It is not words, but actions that prove our faith is genuine. Good works will always accompany the faith that saves us. Are you and I able to say to someone, who is not a Christian, ‘I will show you my faith by my works’, verse 18.
Two contrasting Old Testament characters bring home the challenge to our hearts. It was when ABRAHAM showed that he was prepared to offer up Isaac, his son, upon the altar that he demonstrated the reality of his faith. His faith ‘made perfect (complete)’ by his works, verse 22. Similarly, RAHAB’S faith, Joshua chapter 2 verses 8-11, was seen to be genuine, when she received the messengers and sent them home a different and a safe way, verse 25.
If we see fellow Christians in need of the necessities of life and yet, all we can offer them are words of concern, we prove that our faith is ‘dead’. Actions that alleviate the suffering must accompany our words, if they are to make a difference. Showing mercy to others is proof that we have a living faith and will enable us to face the coming judgement seat of Christ with confidence, verse 13.
