We are born sinners and heading for a lost eternity. We are without hope and without God in the world; therefore, we need salvation. In our previous meditation, we noted that ‘Salvation is of the Lord’ and it does not depend upon what we, or others, can do.
It is natural for us to doubt and Satan loves to make us do so! However, I can be sure of my salvation:
- if I realise what God did for me, when He saved me, 1 John 1 v 9 – he placed a new nature in me, which is incapable of sin. ‘Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God’, 1 John 3 v 9.
- if I realise that it depends on Christ, not on me or my feelings. ‘He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him (Christ), since He always lives to make intercession for them’, Hebrews 7 v 25.
- if I trust God’s Word – numerous Scriptures testify to the security of our salvation in Christ, e.g. ‘God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son’, 1 John 5 v 11; ‘we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ’, Romans 5 v 1.
- if I test my life. ‘Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith’, 2 Corinthians 13. 5.
- if I realise the God will never abandon or fail His people – we can never be lost! ‘Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?’ Romans 8 v 35.
It is comforting to know that when it comes to salvation, we can rest secure, because it rests in God and not in man. The hymn writer sums it up:
No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me.
From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand,
Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
