Lockdown or Freedom

As I write, the overwhelming question of the day is, ‘When is the lockdown going to end?’ Most people have been patient with the loss of freedom up until now, but they are becoming less so. It is understandable that they enjoy freedom rather than ‘slavery’; nevertheless, our prayer is that they might desire spiritual freedom more.

The Bible teaches that we are all born in ‘lockdown’, i.e. we are ‘slaves of sin’ Romans chapter 6 verse 17. We are sinners by nature and no dictates of Government or self-effort can make us free; yet, there is hope: ‘Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed’, John chapter 8 verse 36. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, entered this world and gave His life on the cross as a sacrifice for sin. Faith in Him releases us from the ‘slavery’ of sin. In a sense, we exchange one ‘slavery’ for another: ‘But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life’, Romans chapter 6 verse 22.

We must wait for our freedom from coronavirus; however, we can have freedom from sin, immediately, by turning in repentance to God and placing our faith in the Lord Jesus.
