Coping with loss

Have you lost a loved one, a friend, a co-worker in recent days? Do you know someone who is dealing with a devastating loss? In addition to the concerns and anxieties regarding our own health, our financial status, our future plans, there is this huge weight of grief and loss to carry.

The five stages of grief have been well documented as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But to these five there is one more that might be added – meaning. When Jesus was talking to his disciples about His impending death, He told them this, “Now is your time of grief.” They would mourn when He died and they thought they would not see Him again. But He then gave them this promise: “I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you” John chapter 16 verse 22.

If we want to get through the stages of grief to the last and best stage – meaning – we must have the same hope the disciples had – the absolute confidence that what Jesus told them was true. Jesus went on to say, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” John chapter 16 verse 33.
