Victory!

On 8 May 1945 victory in Europe was declared – VE Day. It took a little longer for victory to come to other parts of the world, the second world war to end and peace return. Victory! Peace! Freedom!

But at what cost? As we reflect today on the sadness and yet joys of those distant events, may we ever be thankful for those who gave their lives to bring us victory, peace and freedom today. And be thankful too today for those serving ‘on the frontline’ of the coronavirus pandemic.

2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ once spoke remarkable words, He said: ‘Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends’, John chapter 15 verse 13. Greater love …. lay down one’s life … Can we ever begin to fathom such love and such actions? Shortly after speaking those words, Jesus would be crucified: ‘Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God’ 1 Peter chapter 3 verse 18.

A childhood chorus says it all: How greatly Jesus must have loved me … to bear my sin … in His body on the tree. Don’t forget that momentous event at Calvary and its life changing effect on millions of lives in every generation.
