Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. It is fitting that the Nightingale Hospitals, set up to help cope with the pandemic, should bear her name. She became known as ‘The Lady with the Lamp’. She came to prominence during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers. Armed with a lamp, she visited the wards of wounded soldiers in the lonely hours of the night. A strong Christian commitment to God motivated her in her work.
As I think of her, I am reminded of the words of King David to God: ‘For you will light my LAMP; the Lord my God will ENLIGHTEN my darkness’, Psalm 18 verse 28.
Another psalmist wrote, ‘Your word is a LAMP to my feet and a LIGHT to my path’, Psalm chapter 119 verse 105.
Jesus Himself said, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life’, John chapter 8 verse 12.
It is only the Lord Jesus who can bring light into our darkened souls and give us an eternal hope.
