God’s ‘Afters’ (2/3)

Many great prophets appeared on the stage of Israel’s history prior to the coming of Jesus Christ into the world. However, we can confidently confirm that one of them holds prime position; indeed, he was the last and the greatest of them. This is what Jesus said of him: ‘For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist’, Luke chapter 7 verse 28.

We might well ask if it is possible to find a greater man than this? Praise God, it is! There is an AFTER in the Bible that presents to us a Man who is above all men, including John the Baptist. John said of Him, ‘AFTER me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me’, John chapter 1 verse 30. With this Man eternity stepped into time – He is Jesus Christ, the ETERNAL SON OF GOD. John was the messenger sent by God to prepare the way for His coming.

Crowds gathered to listen to John and questioned him as to whether he was the Messiah but he stated, consistently, ‘I am not the Christ’, John chapter 1 verse 20. He had a clear understanding of GOD’S AFTER! If there had never been a greater man that John the Baptist, there would be no message of salvation. Although he became the greatest prophet ever, he was born like all other men, i.e. a sinner in need of God’s salvation. He knew that Jesus was the holy, eternal Son of God and dwelt in heaven before he (John) was born. He could point to Him and say, ‘Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’, John chapter 1 verse 29.

GOD’S ‘AFTER’ WAS, INDEED, WORTH WAITING FOR!
