SUGGESTED READING: Genesis chapter 11 verses 27-32; chapter 12 verses 1-5; Hebrews chapter 11 verses 8-10.
There is a strong affinity between the Old Testament characters of Enoch, Noah and Abraham. They were all, in a sense, ‘translated men’, i.e., they were men who were lifted above their immediate surroundings and led to anticipate other surroundings. ENOCH dreamed of HEAVEN; NOAH dreamed of A LAND BEYOND THE FLOOD; ABRAHAM dreamed of A CITY BEYONG THE YEARS OF TIME!
Meditate upon how remarkable Abraham’s faith was:
- it rose above the search for an earthly country (Canaan)
- ‘he waited for THE CITY which had foundations, whose builder and maker is God’, Hebrews chapter 11 verse 10.
- he looked for a city beyond time – a unique, eternal city, with eternal foundations, laid by God!
- he never saw it – nor have we, but we must continue, like him, to look for it, by faith!
- ‘For here we have no continuing city, but we seek THE ONE to come’, Hebrews chapter 13 verse14.
- the details of this coming city are found in Revelation chapters 21 & 22.
Meditate upon the remarkable statement of the Lord Jesus:
- ‘Your Father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad’, John chapter 8 verse 56.
- remarkably, Abraham saw, by faith, the death, resurrection and ascension of Christ, when, figuratively, he offered up Isaac on Mount Moriah.
-
we do not give Abraham and other Old Testament characters enough credit for the remarkable faith they displayed!
Meditate upon the remarkable statement in Hebrews chapter 11:
- ‘These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth’, Hebrews chapter 11 verse 13.
