OVERVIEW OF ‘PRIDE’
IT IS A FEATURE OF THE LAST DAYS
- ‘But know this, that in the LAST DAYS perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, PROUD, blasphemers, disobedient to parents . . .’, 2 Timothy chapter 3 verses 1-2
IT IS SIN
- ‘A HAUGHTY look, a PROUD heart and the plowing of the wicked are SIN’, Proverbs chapter 21 verse 4.
IT COMES FROM WITHIN ME
- ‘For from WITHIN, OUT OF THE HEART of men proceed evil thoughts . . . PRIDE . . . All these evil things come from within and defile a man’, Mark chapter 7 verses 21-23.
IT IS A PRODUCT OF THE FLESH
- ‘For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) dwells no good thing’, Romans chapter 7 verse 18.
IT IS OF THE WORLD
- ‘For all that is in the WORLD – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the PRIDE OF LIFE – is not of the Father but is of the world’, 1 John chapter 2 verse 16
IT HAS NO ROOM FOR GOD
- ‘The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts’, Psalm 10 verse 4.
IT HAS NO TIME FOR THE WORD OF GOD
- ‘If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, HE IS PROUD, knowing nothing’, 1 Timothy chapter 6 verses 3-4.
IT IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE DEVIL
- Paul tells Timothy that a bishop (overseer) in a local church must not be a novice, ‘lest being puffed up with PRIDE he falls into the same condemnation as the DEVIL’, 1 Timothy chapter 3 verse 6.
