Sorrow On The Sea (3)

We have seen in our meditations this week the many times that the restless SEA appears in the Scriptures as a backdrop to distressing incidents, which remind us of the SORROW and lack of peace seen among the nations of the world today. It is not surprising, therefore, to discover that many hymn writers used the imagery of the tossing and turning SEA to point us to our need for God’s guidance and protection throughout the perils that confront us in our lives. It is fitting therefore that we should end by meditating on some of the words they wrote:

Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave,

Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep;

O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril on the sea.

Master, the tempest is raging! The billows are tossing high!

The sky is o’ershadowed with blackness, no shelter or hope is nigh;

Carest Thou not that we perish? How canst Thou lie asleep,

When each moment so madly is threatening a grave in the angry deep?

The winds and the waves shall obey Thy will, Peace be still!

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry:

All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save.

I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear My light to them?

Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.

I will go, Lord. If You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

Be still my soul, the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below
