There has been a major emphasis on the need for cleanliness, if we are to protect ourselves from coronavirus. Central to this has been the call for regular and thorough hand washing, preferably with soap and water. The hands of the nation have never been so clean!

Important as this message is, it is not as vital as the need for spiritual cleanliness. Isaiah, a prophet in the Old Testament wrote, ‘But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, Isaiah chapter 64 verse 6. Inwardly, therefore, sin has made us unclean and no amount of cleansing with soap and water is going to put that right! A leper once said to Jesus, ‘If you are willing, You can make me clean’. Jesus said to him, ‘I am willing; be cleansed’ Mark chapter 1 verses 40-41. He is the only One who can make us clean within, because He is the only One who is without sin. He died on the cross at Calvary and shed His precious blood that ‘cleanses us from all sin’ 1 John chapter 1 verse 7.
