Independence Day!

Today, most of us in the UK will not be thinking of 4 July 1776, the American Independence Day, when the 13 American colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states. Instead we will be thinking more of Lockdown Independence Day! as more of the restrictions of these past 15 weeks will be eased and we can, responsibly, socialise more and visit more and more public places. I hope to get a haircut today!

In all honesty, we are only at this milestone because of many Lockdown Dependence Days! As a nation we have been wholly dependent on our fellow men and women who have worked tirelessly, and at great cost to themselves and to their families, on many frontlines, both in our hospitals and communities. Like the weekly ‘Claps’, a big ‘Thank You’ does not seem adequate either but it is sincerely given.

How greater our total dependence on the Life-giving Creator and God of heaven. A preacher once addressing a crowd of idol worshippers had to inform them ‘… God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from any one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ Acts chapter 17 verses 27-28. Will you ‘reach out for Him and find Him’?
