The Gospel in a Nutshell

One of the most glorious verses in the Bible is John chapter 3 verse 16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” The verse is often known as “The Gospel in a Nutshell”. If we had no other part of the Bible except this verse, we have enough information to lead us to salvation, forgiveness and eternal life. The essential ingredients of the Gospel message are contained in these few words as they focus upon God’s love for us which led to the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins on the cross and the need of a response of faith and commitment on our part.

In the nineteenth century there were many pickpockets on the streets of London and people were deprived of their valuables very easily by skilled thieves. The pickpocket, Henry Moorhouse, always looked very young for his age but he could not leave his dwelling without resorting to stealing. Sometimes he was caught and jailed and while doing one of those stretches a clergyman came to the prison and explained to Moorhouse the truth of John 3.16. The light dawned upon his soul and he came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and knew the blessing of forgiveness. He then had to train himself out of the habit of stealing, which took nine months of wearing thick heavy gloves every time he left home. He then became a preacher of the Gospel and was known as the “Boy Preacher of England” and continually preached from one verse, John 3.16 and though his sermons were always different they revolved around the essentials of God’s love, the sacrifice of Jesus and the need we have to accept Christ into our lives by faith. He knew the blessing of God through this verse and wanted others to receive that blessing too.
