Death is something that many people prefer to push into the back of their minds. They will even resort to using light-hearted phrases to describe it, in order to escape from its challenges. This week, we will consider phrases used by three Bible characters to describe death. Far from being light-hearted, they lead us to face up to realities about death.
When he was nearing the end of his life, David, king of Israel, said to Solomon, his son and heir, ‘I GO THE WAY OF ALL THE EARTH, be strong , therefore, and prove yourself a man’, 1 Kings chapter 2 verse 2. We often deceive ourselves into believing that death happens to everyone else but not to me! Even though David was on the throne of Israel, he recognised death claims all of us. The Bible says, ‘And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgement’, Hebrews chapter 9 verse 27. Have you taken this reality to heart? You can’t escape it, but you can escape God’s judgement. The amazing truth is that, ‘Christ was offered (died) once to bear the sins of many’, Hebrews chapter 9 verse 28.
