During recent months we have heard world leaders sharing with us their hopes for a bright future ahead of Covid-19. Some of them have even employed Biblical language to illustrate their visions. Recently, the UK Prime Minister said, ‘In the depths of the second world war, in 1942 when just about everything had gone wrong, the government sketched out a vision of the post war new Jerusalem that they wanted to build. And that is what we are doing now – in the teeth of this pandemic’. Sadly, he showed a lack of understanding of Biblical teaching about ‘the New Jerusalem’. It will not be built by the UK government; it will descend ‘out of heaven from God’, Revelation chapter 21 verse 10. Indeed, by the time this happens, ‘the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat’, 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 10. Arising out of this destruction, there will be ‘new heavens and a new earth’, 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 13.
The description God gives of the New Jerusalem is majestic: ‘The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb (Jesus Christ) is its light . . . But there shall be by no means enter into it anything that defiles . . . and there shall be no more curse . . . there shall be no night there’, Revelation chapter 21 verses 23, 27; chapter 22 verses 3, 5. No government could build such a place! It will be inhabited by all who have exercised faith in God since sin invaded His world. Do you want to enter this eternal city? You can, through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ.
