Can we have hope in the darkest of times?  The answer is, yes.

David in Psalm 31verse 24, despite the great distresses he was going through, was able to say Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord. David trusted in God and in Psalm 62 verse 6 he refers to the Lord as my rock and salvation.

Countless Christians who have turned from their wrongdoing and put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, have experienced the same hope.  Horatio Spafford was a successful lawyer only to experience different tragedies including the loss of his four daughters at sea.  Following these tragedies, he wrote the hymn:

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

Why?  Because as Spafford later says in the hymn:

My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.
