As the UK braces itself for a second wave of Covid 19, it is interesting to note the things that concern people most. The overriding concern appears to be as to whether we will be able to celebrate a ‘normal Christmas’. If any political leader was able to guarantee such a thing, s/he would gain immediate popularity. 

What a contrast to the ‘first Christmas’! The greatest message that has ever been heard on earth came to fallen mankind on that occasion: ‘For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’, Luke chapter 2 verse 11. If only people had opened their hearts to receive this Saviour, it would have been a real ‘life-changer’ for them and mankind in general. Sadly, they were not even prepared to acknowledge that they were sinners, let alone that they were in need of a Saviour.

Christmas, since then, has been ‘Christ-less’ for the majority of people and based upon customs from pre-Christian winter celebrations. It has become a time of festivities and family celebrations. However, as one author has said, ‘There has only ever been one Christmas; the rest have been anniversaries’. For Christians, the message of Christmas has remained the same:

‘But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law’, Galatians chapter 4 verse 4.

‘The Father has sent the Son as Saviour of the world’, 1 John chapter 4 verse 14.

‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us’, John chapter 1 verse 14.

‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us’, Matthew chapter 1 verse 23.

‘For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given’, Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6.
