We awoke one morning last week in the UK to exciting news. We discovered that we had become the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, paving the way for mass vaccination. The move from concept to reality has been impressive. A process that normally takes 10 years to complete has been achieved in 10 months!
However, ‘salvation’ from the pandemic will not be immediate – it will take some time for it to be rolled out to millions of people, who will need to be patient. Nevertheless, the Health Secretary has confidently predicted that ‘we’re going to have a summer next year that everybody can enjoy.’
The upcoming Christmas period in 2020 has, suddenly and unexpectedly, taken on a much more positive feel than was the case just 24 hours ago! It has given the nation something to rejoice about, when uplifting news has been in short supply. It is sad, however, that it is unlikely to lead more people to rejoice in the even better news of the Christmas message.
When mankind’s rebellion to God (sin) was at its height, God demonstrated His love for us by sending His only Son (Jesus) into the world to be our Saviour. This news led a diverse group of people to rejoice, e.g. wise men from the East; shepherds in Bethlehem; Mary; Simeon and Anna in the Temple. This event had been planned by God in eternity. Amazingly, He sent His Son to die and take the judgement for our sin, so that we would not perish but have everlasting life! No vaccine could achieve this. All we have to do is to turn in repentance to God and have faith in Jesus Christ. This salvation is, free, immediate and available to all.
