Reading: Luke chapter 9 verses 28-31
In the New Testament we meet two important Old Testament characters, who had died and yet they were very much alive!
‘Now it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that He (Jesus) took Peter, John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, TWO MEN TALKED WITH HIM, WHO WERE MOSES AND ELIJAH, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem’.
Moses and Elijah lived on earth many years before Jesus was born; therefore, they give us a clear picture of what it is like ‘on the other side of death’. Firstly, they retain their identity. They are still known by their names. Secondly, they are with Christ and speaking with Him. Paul, speaks of the Christian, after death, as being ‘with Christ, which is far better’. Thirdly, both of them failed and disappointed God, but here they are perfectly at ease as they talked with Jesus.
Thankfully, all our failures will not be brought up when we reach heaven! Fourthly, they discovered the meaning of their lives, when they reached ‘the other side’. They discussed with Jesus, ‘His decease (exodus) which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem’. They would, undoubtedly, have understood the meaning of the exoduses that they had led – Moses led the exodus of the children of Israel out of Egypt and Elijah led the exodus out of idolatry. Both of these pointed forward to Jesus’s death (exodus).
Let us consider at this difficult time, life ‘on the other side’ of death – it is so much better!
