All (2)

‘But we are ALL like an unclean thing, and ALL our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we ALL fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away’, Isaiah chapter 64 verse 6.

This statement does not make for easy reading; indeed, there are no exceptions to the uncomfortable truth that we are ALL unclean and we are powerless to do anything about it. Like a decomposed leaf, we are weak in the face of the things that are against us. Also, like the wind, our sins have driven us away from God. Even the very best that we can offer are unacceptable to God.

Job, an Old Testament character, who was blameless, upright, feared God and shunned evil said, ‘Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?’ He answered his own question with two despairing words, ‘No one’, Job chapter 14 verse 4. However, if we turn over to the New Testament, we discover that God’s answer is very different! If Job says, ‘No one’, God says, ‘Just one’. An example of an unclean person in Bible times was a leper; indeed, leprosy is a picture of sin. Lepers lived in isolation outside the city and if they entered the city they had to cover their lip and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ It was a highly contagious disease and no one would touch or come near to a leper. At the commencement of Jesus’s public ministry, a leper approached Him and said, ‘If you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus was moved with compassion and stretched out His hand and said, ‘I am willing; be cleansed.’ As He was the holy and sinless Son of God, He was the only One who could do this and not become unclean. Immediately He touched the leper, he was cleansed.

What Jesus did for this man, physically, he can do for ALL of us, spiritually. If we come to Him and believe, by faith, that He died on the cross for our sins, we can be cleansed immediately from our uncleanness and made fit for heaven!
