As the UK begins to emerge out of the pandemic lockdown, our Prime Minister has outlined his ‘cautious and IRREVERSIBLE roadmap out of Covid19’ that we must follow, if we are to be successful. We hope that the plan will be irreversible but we are far from confident, given many people’s unwillingness to follow the rules.
The debate about the proposed Plan has led me to think, more importantly, of some of the IRREVERSIBLE things presented to us by God in the Bible. I invite you to consider three of them with me in our meditations this week.
Paul wrote these words to a young Christian, called Timothy: ‘For there is one God and ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus’, 1 Timothy 2 verse 5. These words are as true today as they were when they were written, i.e. THEY ARE IRREVERSIBLE! Ever since sin invaded God’s world, men and women have been acting as if they can build a bridge between themselves and an offended God. Sin has separated us from Him, not only for time, but for eternity. The Bible makes it clear that whatever we do we cannot remove the distance between us and Him. The simple truth is that we do not have the answer; however, He does! He has sent His holy and perfect Son to be the Mediator. Soon after the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, Peter preached, ‘Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved’, Acts chapter 4 verse12. That Name, of course, was ‘Jesus Christ’. This statement is irreversible! If you have not already done so, recognise Him as the only Mediator between God and men and women, and trust Him as your Saviour! It is a disastrous path to tread, to seek to reverse God’s word.
